T

he Cilacap Police tightened security on Saturday at the Wijaya Pura Pier in Cilacap, Central Java, which is the entry point to the notorious Nusakambangan prison island.

Cilacap Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Ulung Sampurna Jaya said the pier was being cleared of all visitors.

"There are no more guests and families who can meet convicts on death row," he said.

"Relatives and guests for other inmates must also wait until the execution process is concluded."

Six people are scheduled to be executed on Sunday.

Malawian Namaona Denis, Dutchman Ang Kiem Soei, Indonesian Rani Andriani, Nigerian Daniel Enemuo and Brazilian Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira will be executed on the prison island that hosts seven maximum-security penitentiaries. Meanwhile, Vietnamese convict Tran Thi Bich Hanh will be executed in Boyolali, also in Central Java. Rani and Tran are female convicts.

Ulung said the execution team was from the police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit, which deployed 48 personnel for the task.

As of Saturday afternoon, the police were busy transporting a number of pieces of equipment for the executions such as tents and five ambulances to the island via the Wijaya Pura Pier. (nvn)
