ajor flooding, which has hit Indramayu regency, West Java, has forced up to 15,000 residents to evacuate to safer areas, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
Head of BNPB's data and information Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Tuesday the flooding inundated thousands of homes and around 100 hectares of rice fields.
Nugroho said that the flooding was caused by damaged embankments along the Cimanuk River especially in Kertasemaya district, on Monday.
"The level of the flooding had reached 50-300 centimeters, but now it's subsided to 30-150 cm," Nugroho said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Flooding has affected seven districts, namely Jatibarang, Kertasmaya, Loh Bener, Bangodua, Sindang, Tukdana and Pesekan.
Jatibarang and Kertasemaya were the worst hit with water levels rising to 3 meters.
"The flooding has also cut Java's northern coastal highway in Indramayu," Nugroho said, adding that travelers heading for Jakarta or Cirebon, were being diverted to Karangampel. (hhr)
