J

akarta governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama has said the Jakarta administration will carry out a moratorium on the development of city-built subsidized low-cost apartments known as rusunami.

The governor said the city would focus on building low-cost rental apartments (rusunawa) instead of rusunami.

"Rusunami are often misused and mismanaged by tenants and their managements. Rusunami are meant for the needy, but what has often happened is investors buy hundreds of units and rent them out for a ridiculously high price. The problem is, it's difficult for us to monitor [such misuse]," Ahok said on Thursday.

Ahok cited the Kalibata City apartment in South Jakarta. He said that some of the apartments in the Kalibata City's towers were meant as rusunami, but were instead rented by their owners for a high price. (ebf)(+++)
