he government will design Batam in Riau as a hub for a submarine cable network to decrease Indonesia's reliance on other countries for telecommunications.
Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said on Thursday that the network would be integrated with the existed Data Recovery Center (DRC) managed by the Batam Free Trade Zone Management Agency (BPK FTZ).
"Lying outside the volcano belt and being close to neighboring countries Singapore and Malaysia, Batam has the potential to be designed as a hub for a submarine cable project, to ensure full capacity of the data center," Rudiantara told The Jakarta Post during his visit to Batam.
At present, there are four submarine cable network operators in Batam that connect the country with Singapore and Malaysia, namely PT Indosat, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, PT Moratel and NAP.
In 2010, the BPK FTZ built the 1,220 square-meter DRC, which has a 105-kilometer-long fiber-optic cable network equipped with fixed-telephone line as well as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology.(++++)
