National scene: Jimly elected to lead ICMI

T

he national congress of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) has appointed Jimly Asshiddiqie as the organization'€™s new chairman.

Spokesperson for the congress Imam Bachtiar said that Jimly was elected for the next five years on Sunday following the decision of a team tasked to select a new leader for the organization.

'€œHe was selected amicably,'€ Imam said as quoted by tempointeraktif.co.

The selection team comprised Ilham Habibi, Zulkifli Hasan, Muhammad Nuh, Heri Suhardianto and Jimly himself.

Jimly, a former chief justice of the Constitutional Court, is currently chairman of the Election Organizers Ethics Council (DKPP).

He failed to make it to the next round of selection for the leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in August this year.

The ICMI was established in 1990 as part of an effort by then president Soeharto to reach out to the country'€™s Muslim community to counterbalance the power of the military.

Then technology and research minister, and later president, BJ Habibie was the association'€™s first chairman.
