Attorney General HM Prasetyo has confirmed that gold and copper mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) president director Maroef Sjamsoeddin was not the initiator of the meeting with House of Representatives Speaker Setya Novanto at a hotel in Jakarta on June 8, which was also attended by oil businessman M. Reza Chalid.
He further said that it was suspected that a wicked conspiracy had occurred during the meeting.
'What we can confirm is that it was not Pak Maroef who had initiated the meeting,' said Prasetyo as quoted by kompas.com on the sidelines of an event at the Attorney General's Office's (AGO) education and training center building in South Jakarta on Tuesday.
Prasetyo did not give details about the parties suspected to have initiated the meeting, however, based on AGO preliminary investigation results, it is known that Setya's private assistant, identified only as Medina, had booked the meeting room at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jakarta. AGO investigators confirmed the booking after they heard an explanation directly from Medina on Monday.
Earlier, AGO investigators made direct inquiries with Maroef and confiscated a mobile phone he had used to record the meeting with Setya and Reza.
During the meeting, it is alleged that Setya promised to facilitate negotiations for the extension of Freeport's mining contract, due to expire in 2021, provided that Freeport gave 11 percent of the mining company's shares to President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and 9 percent to Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
The AGO has planned to question Reza but has yet to confirm a schedule as the oil tycoon is reported to have left Indonesia on Dec.5. (ebf)(+)
