ntertainment news has become the top preference for urban Indonesians who rely on online portals as their news sources, according to a recent survey.
Based on an online news consumption survey by market research company GfK, 73 percent of 1,500 respondents said they read entertainment news every day. The second top preference was social issues (70 percent), followed by political news (49 percent) and sports (48 percent).
According to the survey, entertainment news, which encompasses music and movies, was mostly read by those aged between 13 and 22 years.
"The youth group tends to consume light topics such as entertainment. When they get older, their preference shifts to more serious topics such as politics, social issues, religion and parenting," Robin Mulyadi, GfK media director, said on Wednesday.
The survey showed that females sought entertainment news more frequently than males.
Moreover, there were differences in news consumption on weekdays and weekends. On weekdays people mostly looked at the news from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturdays the peak time was 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. while on Sunday it was 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
"At peak times, most of the consumption is using mobile devices. People mostly look at the news during their break time," Robin said.
On weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Indonesians mostly read the news using desktop computers, meaning many were using their office networks.
The survey was a joint effort by GfK, the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) and the Indonesian Digital Association. Carried out from last year to February 2016, the survey covered Greater Jakarta (Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi), Bandung, Semarang and Surabaya.
"This survey is the first. We will increase the cities to 12 for this year’s second survey," Robin said.
Bekraf chairman Triawan Munaf expressed his satisfaction with the results, saying the online media survey would be useful in determining how online media needed to move.
"We need this kind of survey, not only for media companies but also for marketing agencies and companies that want to place ads, and the regulator," Triawan said. (bbn)
