he Golkar Party will kick off a two-day national leadership meeting on Wednesday to seal the deal on support for the reelection of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the 2019 presidential election.
The opening ceremony on Wednesday is expected to see Jokowi deliver his speech before senior party members as well as leaders of the party’s regional branch offices.
“The [leadership] meeting is to follow up on the national congress last May, during which we pledged support for Pak Jokowi to run again in the 2019 election,” Golkar’s secretary-general Idrus Marham told a press briefing on Tuesday.
Golkar, however, must first resolve an ongoing internal power struggle in order to ensure that all factions within the party are of one voice in backing Jokowi. The initial way to do so has been accomplished by electing Setya Novanto, a figure considered acceptable to the State Palace, to succeed Aburizal Bakrie who was regarded as beyond its control.
