round 200 followers of Muslim sect “Islam Aboge” (Alif Rebo Wage) in Onje village, Purbalingga regency, Central Java, performed Idul Adha prayers on Wednesday, or two days later after most Muslims across the world generally celebrate the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, on Monday.

On Wednesday morning, hundreds of Islam Aboge followers gathered at the Sayyid Kuning Mosque in Onje village to attend a Quran recitation, after which they performed Idul Adha prayers, Antara news agency reported.

After the prayers, an Islamic teacher, Kiai Maksudi, gave a sermon delivered in Javanese, during which he explained about the concept of fastabiqul khairat or “race each other in all things that are good.”

The preacher also asked Islam Aboge followers attending the prayers to take the wholeheartedness of Ibrahim’s (Abraham) sacrifice of his son Ishmael as a good example of following Allah’s command in their lives.

After the prayers, the followers shook hands in greeting each other as they chanted shalawat (prayers and praises to the Prophet Muhammad).

Speaking to journalists, Kiai Maksudi said Islam Aboge followers determined the fall of Idul Adha based on a method of calculation, which had been adopted since the era of Sultan Agung of Mataram in the 17th century. “Belief in this calculation’s method has continued until now,” he said.

Based on their calculation, Islam Aboge followers believed that this year’s Idul Adha, celebrated every Dzulhijah 10, fell on Wednesday. (ebf)
