nspired by the true story of Vice President Jusuf Kalla’s mother, Athirah will be screened at three prestigious international film events this year.
The first international première will be at the Vancouver International Film Festival, which will be held from Sept. 29 to Oct. 14.
From Vancouver, the movie, which will take the international title Emma (Mother) will visit the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea from Oct. 6 to Oct. 15 and lastly the Tokyo International Film Festival from Oct. 25 to Nov. 3.
The adaptation of a novel by Alberthiene Endah is directed by Riri Riza, who also co-wrote the script with Salman Aristo.
Produced by Mira Lesmana, the movie follows a family of the Bugis Makassar ethnic group, whose cultural norms and values confine social choices acceptable for women.
Riri said the movie was dedicated to all mothers, while Mira expected it to represent the image of Indonesia to an international audience.
The film will run at Indonesian theaters starting on Sept. 29.
