he murder suspect Jessica Kumala Wongso read her defense plea at the trial on Wednesday, saying that she did not murder her friend, Wayan Mirna Salihin, on Jan. 6.
"I swear, I'm not a killer," Jessica said, crying before the judges at Central Jakarta District Court.
Jessica credited Mirna as being a good, honest friend. Mirna was smart and had a great sense of humor. She never expected Mirna to die at their meeting at Olivier Cafe, Grand Indonesia in Central Jakarta in January.
"After this case, my life will never be the same again. However, I will never regret knowing Mirna. Mirna knows that I didn't poison her. She knows that I would never poison anybody," she said.
Jessica also said she was intimidated by Mirna's family who kept accusing her of having murdered Mirna.
"I wonder, how could Mirna's family be so cruel? Is it because they lost Mirna? Or did they lose Mirna because they were cruel?" Jessica said, adding it was only by God's grace that she could be strong enough to undergo the trials.
Jessica was accused of murdering Mirna by putting cyanide in her coffee cup when they shared a table in a café with another friend on Jan. 6. Mirna died on her way to the hospital from the café. (bbn)
