he Jakarta Social Affairs Agency reports that 1,111 elderly people are currently being looked after at three city-owned nursing homes.
Miftahul Huda of the agency said that around 60 percent of the seniors came from outside Jakarta. "They are not Jakarta [residents]."
Most of them have been taken to the homes after they were found on the streets. Officials were unable to locate family members in the city.
During their stay in the retirement homes, the residents are given counseling and training in some life skills based on their interests.
Aside from the city-owned homes, the agency also provides support to privately owned nursing homes and family-centered shelters provided by family donation support centers (Pusaka). (kkk/dmr)
