A fire razed a part of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta on Thursday.
The fire broke out at around 12 p.m. at the western gate of the stadium. The fire spread from the ground up to the third floor.
As many as 10 fire trucks were rushed to the scene to put out the flames. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire at 1:30 p.m., Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
“The fire claimed no lives and officials are currently calculating the losses,” he said.
Wikrama Wardana, a representative from state-owned construction company PT Adhi Karya, the company handling the renovation of the stadium, said the fire would not affect ongoing preparations for the 2018 Asian Games.
“Our initial inspection shows that the fire did not damage the structure of the building or the main stadium,” he said in a statement. (fac)
