orth Sumatra is getting a new deputy governor following the inauguration of Brig. Gen. (ret) Nurhajizah Marpaung by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday.

Nurhajizah is the first deputy governor to have been named in North Sumatra for the remaining period from 2013 to 2018.

North Sumatra Governor Tengku Erry Nuradi, North Sumatra Legislative Council (DPRD) chairman Wagirin Arman and North Sumatra Police chief Insp. Gen. Rycko Amelza Dahniel are to attend the ceremony at the State Palace on Thursday.

Nurhajizah’s inauguration is to fill a vacancy left when her predecessor, Erry, was promoted to be governor after the previous governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho was convicted in multiple graft cases.

Erry said that he expected Nurhajizah would help him run the administration.

“Governor and deputy governor must be solid and synergized in performing their duties. Let us embody good and clean governance,” he said as quoted in a press statement by the North Sumatra administration.

Nurhajizah, who was supported by the Hanura Party, was elected as deputy governor in a vote by local councilors held at the North Sumatra DPRD on Oct. 24, 2016. (rin)
