on-active Klaten regent Sri Hartini, who allegedly received millions of rupiah in bribes and unlawful gifts from school principals and teachers in the regency, was charged with bribery during a hearing at the Semarang Corruption Court on Monday.
Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor Afni Carolina said the principals and teachers allegedly bribed the regent in their effort to get a promotion.
“She allegedly received money from heads of 34 junior high, senior high and vocational schools who tried to get a new post. Some of the money came from teachers who wanted to become school principals,” said Afni as quoted by kompas.com in Semarang on Monday afternoon.
Afni said Sri Hartini allegedly received Rp 2.04 billion (US$153,406.57) from the principals and teachers. Separately, she was also alleged to have received Rp 12.1 billion in unlawful gifts from 148 heads of villages for post arrangements and other cases.
Afni said as a state official, the Klaten regent should have reported any gifts she received to authorities within three months. It was mandatory for her to file such a report because she had signed an integrity pact after she attended a training program held by the KPK shortly after she was inaugurated as a regent on Feb. 17, 2016.
“A regional head who fails to submit a wealth report three months after they receive gifts can be accused of accepting bribes,” she said.
Sri Hartini was charged under Law No. 31/1999 in reference to Law No. 20/2001 on corruption eradication. (ebf)
