Irfan, Kurnia to power Garuda squad in friendly soccer matches

nfluential senior players Irfan Bachdim and Kurnia Meiga Hermansyah were among 22 players called up to the Indonesian national soccer team, which is set to play friendly matches against Cambodia and Puerto Rico.

Among the senior players head coach Luis Milla called up in addition to midfielder Irfan and goalkeeper Kurnia include midfielders Stefano Lilipaly and Bayu Pradana and defender Fachruddin, the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) said in a statement.

Milla said the shortlisted names were the best soccer players in Indonesia. “Besides, I’d like my team to play with a variety of styles. I also want to boost the squad’s offensive play with support from the senior players,” he said.

Young talents called up to the team include keeper Satria Tama Hardianto, defender Ricky Fajrin Saputra, midfielder Gian Zola Nasrulloh Nugraha and striker Marinus Mariyanto.

The Garuda squad is scheduled to play Cambodia on June 8 in Cambodia and Puerto Rico on June 13 at Maguwoharjo Stadium in Sleman, Yogyakarta.

“After the Cambodia friendly, the squad will fly directly to Sleman for the Puerto Rico [match],” said Fanny Irawan, the deputy head of the national team department.
