ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is set to operate a charter flight connecting Balikpapan and the resort island of Maratua in East Kalimantan.

Served using a ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, the inaugural flight has been scheduled for Sept. 30 and set to fly some 40 tourists from the Netherlands, France, United Kingdom and Germany.

“We are also offering the remaining 22 seats to regular travelers,” said the sales and marketing manager of Garuda Indonesia’s Balikpapan office, Firman Nazar, on Friday. The price tag for the 70-minute flight is around Rp 850,000 (US$64) per passenger.

Maratua is part of the Derawan Islands off the coast of East Kalimantan renowned for its crystal blue waters and abundant sea life, which is popular with divers. It is also one of the country’s outer islands.

Since it was inaugurated in 2016, Maratua Airport only has one regular flight, which is a Susi Air weekly flight to Kalimarau Airport in Tanjung Redeb, Berau regency. Berau Tourism Agency head Mappasikra Mappaselenng said more than 3,000 arrivals had been recorded in Maratua this year, mostly comprising foreign tourists.
