he granddaughter of Indonesia's first president, Puti Guntur Soekarno, has registered on Wednesday for next year's West Java gubernatorial election, becoming the only woman candidate of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to do so.
Puti is currently a member of the House of Representatives Commission X, which oversees education and sports.
She emerged as the PDI-P's only woman candidate when Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti and Netty Heryawan, the wife of West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan, did not show up at Wednesday's event to hear the visions and thoughts of potential candidates.
“We will only process the people who attended,” said PDI-P West Java chairman Tubagus Hasanuddin.
During the event, Puti proposed empowering women to develop West Java.
She also suggested that a safe house should be established for victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence, a place where women could share their experiences.
“I am very concerned about domestic violence, and the rate in West Java is very high,” Puti said.

Puti further highlighted the high poverty rate in the province. “I learned from my grandfather that we should possess economic sovereignty and independence,” she said.
Other gubernatorial candidates registered with the PDI-P include West Java Deputy Governor Deddy Mizwar, Purwakarta Regent Dedi Mulyadi, Majalengka Regent Soetrisno and the National Police's head of education and training, Insp. Gen. Anton Charliyan. (saf/jun/bbs)
