President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has expressed confidence in Perry Warjiyo, a deputy governor at Bank Indonesia (BI), as his pick as the sole candidate for the top job at the central bank.
Perry, who will retire in April, was the only name nominated and lodged by Jokowi late last week for the House of Representatives’ approval.
Jokowi said Perry's track record and experience as a senior BI deputy governor proved that Perry had mastered the monetary field, inflation issues as well as policies issued by the central bank.
"I suppose there is no doubt over Pak Perry Warjiyo's proficiency," Jokowi told reporters on Tuesday.
Perry will replace BI Governor Agus Martowardojo, who is set to end his term in May. The House is scheduled to carry out a screening of the nominated candidate in April prior to the approval.
Jokowi's statement on Tuesday served as the first confirmation from the President himself on Perry's nomination, which had circulated over the past weekend.
Previously, four candidates were mentioned as possible replacements, namely former finance ministers Chatib Basri and Bambang Brodjonegoro, incumbent Agus Martowardojo and Perry. (ebf)
