Indonesian taekwondo athletes Ibrahim Zarman and Dinggo Ardian failed to add medals for the country at the Asian Games.
ndonesian taekwondo athletes Ibrahim Zarman and Dinggo Ardian humbly accepted defeat on Wednesday in the men’s kyorugi event held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex.
Ibrahim, 21, who competed in the men’s 63 kg, bowed out to 22-year-old South Korean Cho Gang-min with a total score of 36-25, denying the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist a chance to earn at least a bronze medal. He previously beat Haroon Khan of Pakistan in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, 21-year-old Dinggo was beaten 24-20 in the round of 32 by Hidenori Ebata of Japan in the men’s 80 kg.
“Unexpectedly. We could not add another medal today,” said Kurnia Rahmi, Indonesia’s taekwondo team manager.
Ibrahim is a multiple gold medalist. He won gold medals at the World Taekwondo Open G1 in March and the 2017 SEA Games, both in Malaysia.
Indonesia won its first and only taekwondo gold medal so far in the women’s poomsae on Sunday, when Defia Rosmaniar wowed judges in the final in her first ever time competing at the quadrennial sporting event.
South Korea, the birthplace of taekwondo, remains on top of the sport, winning four of 10 available gold medals so far. The country has a chance of adding two more gold medals to its tally from the two men's categories.
Indonesia’s Dhean Titania Fajrin will compete in the women’s 49 kg round of 32 on Thursday.
