he Jakarta Police have called on soccer fans to refrain from vengeful action following the death of a 23-year-old member of the Jakmania fan club at the hands of a mob after a soccer match in Bandung, West Java.
Police dismissed rumors that Jakmania was planning to conduct sweeping raids to prevent Bandung-registered vehicles – those with license plate numbers beginning with the character “D” – from entering Jakarta, as a form of revenge for the death of Haringga Sirila.
“We ask all soccer fans -- especially in Jakarta — not to take revenge. This is a matter of sportsmanship. What we want is a safe soccer environment for everyone,” said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono on Monday.
Haringga was killed by a group of people after the match between Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung on Sunday.
“It was an avoidable loss, and we hope it doesn’t happen again. Of course, we want all sport fans to have a good time, but not to hurt anyone,” Argo added.
He also said the police had talked with Persija director I Gede Widiade, who had also released a press statement expressing his condolences, and would support the West Java Police in processing the case.
West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan have expressed their condolences online. (nor)
