lthough the Jakarta History Museum and Fatahillah Square in West Jakarta saw a meteoric rise in the number of visitors during the New Year holiday compared to regular weekends, the figure is slightly lower than that of the corresponding period last year.

The museum’s guide coordinator, Amat Kusaini Al Alexs, told tempo.co that the number of visitors on the first day of 2019 reached 8,000, far higher than the 1,000 to 2,000 seen on regular days.

However, the number was higher last year, when over 10,000 visitors flocked to the popular site on Jan. 1, 2018.

Amat surmised that weather conditions affected the number of visitors, as heavy rainfall hit fell over the city on Tuesday.

He added that tourists began visiting the site at noon.

The management of the museum provided various forms of entertainment for New Year celebrations, including traditional percussion and kulintang performances by senior high school students. (fac)
