The government plans to complete the Manggarai-Cikarang double-double track (DDT) railway project by 2020.
The DDT will function to separate the tracks between long-distance trains, commuter lines and the airport train to ensure every trip is shorter.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the passenger load factor of the commuter lines would also increase with the completion of the DDT project.
“The current capacity is 1.2 million passengers. We will increase it to 2 million passengers,” he said on Saturday.
Budi added the headway for commuter trains would be shortened from five minutes to three minutes to serve more passengers.
The minister also said there was a lack of “window time” as the train tracks were always busy.
“The targeted year of completion is in two years’ time because, in a day, construction can only last for a maximum of four hours,” he said.
Commuter lines stop operating at 12 p.m. and begin at 5 a.m., giving the government a short period of time during which it can work on the project.
