Being a farmer for a day at Four Seasons Bali in Sayan

A weekend in Ubud, Bali, could mean an array of leisurely activities; calming yoga, relaxing spa treatment by the river, savoring culinary treats and rafting at the Ayung River, just to name a few. But for The Jakarta Post, when visiting the area at the invitation of Four Seasons Bali, a chance to plant rice with  local farmers seemed interesting.

That morning, the Post and a fellow farmer for the day waited in the gym reception room of Four Seasons Bali in Sayan to meet Agus, the recreation attendant who would be guiding us on a walk through the rice fields, village and jungle paths before a breakfast by the river and then rice planting. While we knew that a simple, comfortable top and shorts or ankle-length pants would be the best outfits for the activity, we were unaware that the walking part required proper walking shoes. We only had on flip-flops, but it was not a problem as the resort had shoes available to rent, so we were good to go.

Composer Pamela Kosin to leave mark with debut album

The things Pamela Kosin remembers best from her childhood are the music concerts, orchestra practices and being in the studio with her father. As the eldest daughter of Aminoto Kosin, the keyboardist of renowned Indonesian jazz band Karimata, music has always been there. It was only natural then that Pamela took violin and piano lessons as a child, which led to her participation in the Jakarta-based Amadeus Symphony Orchestra during high school.

Curiously though, she never thought of actually becoming a musician. After high school, she took advantage of an art scholarship for the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, United States, in 2010. The scholarship required that Pamela be an assistant music director in the Performing Arts department. This meant she would be involved in musicals, making music arrangements as well as playing the violin in plays. “That made me go back to music and made me wonder if, perhaps, I should continue my path in it,” the 27-year-old said during a recent interview with The Jakarta Post in Jakarta.

‘Salute’ concert to honor three female musicians

The “Salute” concert, led by composer Erwin Gutawa, is set to honor three female Indonesian singer-songwriters -- Melly Goeslaw, Dewiq and Dewi “Dee” Lestari -- at the one-night event slated for Feb. 9.

To be held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in Tangerang, Banten, the concert will showcase 30 songs written by the female artists, with 10 chosen to represent each one. As a twist, the songs will be sung by an all-male line-up to pay respect to the female musicians. They will be accompanied by an orchestra led by Erwin.
