ormer terrorist convict Noim Ba’asyir died of a heart attack on Saturday, less than a week after his release from prison last Tuesday.
Noim died at 9 p.m. at a hospital in Surakarta, Central Java, at 45 years old. He was a relative of firebrand cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, who was convicted of masterminding the 2002 Bali bombings.
M. Fauzi, Noim’s younger brother, said Noim had trouble breathing as he was on his way to a friend’s wedding. He was then taken to the hospital.
“Indeed, my brother has had issues with asthma. He was unconscious when the medical team got to him,” Fauzi told Antara on Sunday.
He added that Noim would be buried at Polokarto Cemetery in Sukoharjo, Central Java, on Sunday.
In 2012, Noim was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in a terror organization, however he had his sentence cut to five years and nine months.
He also caught public attention in 2016 after appealing for a private area for him and his wife while imprisoned at Pamekasan Penitentiary in East Java.
Meanwhile, controversy surrounding his uncle Abu Bakar had put President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the spotlight last month, who was planning to release the man on account of his unstable health conditions.
Soon after, he canceled his plans and emphasized that Abu Bakar had to pledge allegiance to Pancasila before he could be considered for release. Abu Bakar, however, had still rejected the offer as of Sunday.
