A

fishing boat named Sri Langgeng Jaya reportedly sank in waters off Kelapa Dua Island in Thousand Islands regency on Thursday, after strong waves struck the boat.

Thousand Islands Police criminal unit head First. Insp. Fahmi Amarullah said the boat was sailing when a huge wave suddenly struck.

“When [the crew] were spreading nets for fishing, a big wave came on the east side of Kelapa Dua Island, which sank the boat,” Fahmi said in a written statement on Saturday.

Six crew members jumped into the water. After hours tossing around in the sea, the crew was recovered. However, the incident claimed the life of one of the crew members, identified as Casmidi.

“[The crew] was taken to Kalijapat Harbor in North Jakarta on CB MMS Accelerate. Five of the fishing boat crew survived the incident,” he said, as reported by kompas.com.

Casmidi’s body had been returned to his family, Fahmi said. (sau)
