T

he government has sealed four illegal dumpsites on Jl. Narogong Raya in CIleungsi, Bogor, West Java, following protests by residents.

The garbage dumps in community unit (RT) 05 and neighborhood unit (RW) 02 in Limus Nunggal subdistrict did not have any licenses to operate and did not follow proper environmental regulations, according to the Environment and Forestry Ministry’s law enforcement division. Officials said the dumps also endangered the environment and the health of nearby residents.

Investigators had questioned three managers of the disposal sites and summoned two more who were not at the sites when they were sealed.

“We will seriously handle these illegal dumpsites because of their impact on the locals,” the ministry’s law enforcement general director, Rasio Ridho Sani, said in a written statement on Wednesday.

The managers of the illegal dumps could be charged under Law No. 18/2008 on waste management, as well as under Law No. 32/2009 on environmental protection and management. (ami)
