In the viral video, which was circulated on Instagram, a group of young men could be seen struggling to get off a bus as it entered the Tanah Abang underpass.
akarta Governor Anies Baswedan plans to formulate a regulation that would forbid people from riding on top of vehicles, after a video went viral on social media showing several roof riders nearly crushed by an underpass.
The group of minors had climbed on top of a bus as part of a takbiran (recitation of “Allah is great” on the eve of Idul Fitri) convoy on Tuesday evening.
In the viral video, which was circulated on Instagram, they could be seen struggling to get off the bus as it entered the Tanah Abang underpass and the space between the vehicle and the top of the structure began to narrow.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
“We will formulate a special regulation so that drivers will not let people ride the roofs of buses,” Anies said on Wednesday.
He had participated in a takbiran convoy the day before by riding on the bed of a pick-up truck provided by the Jakarta Transportation Agency, not long after the National Police urged celebrants not to perform takbiran on streets due to security concerns.
Anies added that there should be a penalty for drivers who let people ride on the roof of their vehicle. (dpk)
