At least two people have died and eight are missing after a passenger ship capsized in East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday morning.
Thirty passengers had reportedly been aboard the vessel, KM Nusa Kenari, which was sailing from Kalabahi Alor to Poreman village in Alor. It reportedly sank in waters near Tanjung Margeta in Alor, news agency Antara reported.
The head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Maumere, I Putu Sudayana, said at least 20 passengers, including the captain and one crew member, had rescued themselves by swimming to the shore.
The cause of the incident is unknown so far.
“We are still searching for the [the missing] people. We have deployed a team and equipment to the location” Putu said, as quoted by Antara.
However, Putu said the number of passengers was still unclear, since the ship had been operating without permission from the Alor Port Authority (KSOP) that day.
“We don’t know the exact number. We can only get the number of passengers when we ask the surviving crew,” he said. (ggq)
