The new toll roads that are to start operations include part of the trans-Sumatra, the Balikpapan-Samaridan and the Jakarta Outer Ring Round 2 highways.
he Indonesia Toll Road Authority (BPJT) announced that the country aims to open 400 kilometers of new toll roads this year to have a total of 2,000 km of toll roads in operation by the end of 2019.
“The new toll roads include parts of the trans-Sumatra toll road, the Balikpapan-Samaridan toll road and the Jakarta Outer Ring Round 2,” said BPJT head Dadang Parikesit on Sunday as quoted by kontan.co.id, adding that 1,600 km of toll roads are in operation now.
He said about 561 km of the trans-Sumatra toll road – part of which had already been in operation -- were expected to be completed and opened this year, out of plans for a total of 2,755 kilometers across the longest island in the country.
Meanwhile, the length of the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road would be 99.35 km, 90.19 percent of which has been completed, he said.
Danang said 20 percent of the toll roads were owned by private companies, while about 80 percent were owned by state-owned enterprises.
He said the BPJT encouraged toll road operators to use the newest technology to collect tolls to improve efficiency.
“It includes digital transformation by introducing electric toll collection with multilateral free flow,” Danang said, adding that by using the system the drivers do not need to stop when paying. This would ease traffic jams in tall gates. (bbn)
