akarta’s rapid transformation into the metropolitan city it is today has come at the expense of green spaces, which are few and far between in the sprawling urban jungle.

Office buildings began sprouting up so quickly that the capital saw an oversupply between 2015 and 2018. The availability of green spaces, meanwhile, remains stuck at 10 percent of Jakarta’s 661.6 square-kilometer area, falling drastically short of the 30 percent mandated by the 2007 Spatial Planning Law.

Despite the limited space, architects in charge of designing Jakarta’s parks are committed to accommodating the needs of its residents.

One of them is Farrizky Astrawinata, 38, who has been tasked with designing four green open spaces in a program called Taman Maju Bersama (Move Forward Together Park, TMB).

A graduate of the University of Indonesia’s (UI) Department of Architecture, Farrizky previously designed private buildings, such as houses and offices, and began designing public facilities when he was asked by former governorBasuki Thahaja Purnama (BTP) to create integrated child-friendly public spaces (RPTRA).

Farrizky said the needs of residents were the most important thing to consider in designing public spaces as they will be the regular users of the facilities, not the architects.

“We need to understand what they think a public space should be because each location’s preference differs according to the local’s social status, class, all in different spectrums,” he said.
