A

panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court has sentenced six former members of the North Sumatra Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) to four years in prison after they were found guilty of receiving bribes from the province’s former governor, Gatot Pujo Nugroho.

Each of the six former DPRD members are also required to pay a fine of Rp 200 million (US$14,0739) or face an additional three months in prison, presiding judge Iim Nurohim stated in the ruling.

“The court also revokes the defendants’ political rights to run for public office for three years after they serve their sentences,” Iim said as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.

The defendants are Tonnies Sianturi, Tohonan Silalahi, Murni Elieser Verawaty Munthe, Dermawan Sembiring, Arlene Manurung and Syahrial Harahap. They served as North Sumatra DPRD members from 2009 to 2014.

The punishment handed down is the same as demanded by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors during the trial.

The court found the defendants guilty of receiving bribes from Gatot, with the amounts ranging from Rp 477.5 million to Rp 865 million. Several have reportedly handed over the illicit money to the KPK.

The defendants accepted the ruling, except for Dermawan, who said he would consider an appeal.

In 2017, the Medan Corruption Court found Gatot guilty of paying Rp 61.8 billion in bribes to members of the North Sumatra DPRD to smoothen deliberations of the provincial budget.

Gatot was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and fined Rp 250 million. It was the former governor’s third sentence, and was handed down while he was serving time for two sentences he received in 2016. (dpk/afr)
