Depok residents challenged to catch thieves in residential area

ampant thievery and robbery in a residential area in Pancoran Mas district in Depok, West Java, has prompted officers of community unit (RW) 03 in Depok Jaya subdistrict to challenge people to catch the culprits in the act.
RW 03 security officer Syarifuddin said anyone who caught a thief would be rewarded Rp 500,000 (US$35) as a token of appreciation. The reward is aimed at raising people’s awareness and willingness to maintain security.
“We are furious. Thievery and robbery often occur here. A while ago, it happened once in a week for a whole month,” Syarifuddin, who is also head of neighborhood unit (RT) 01 , said, as reported by tempo.co.
He went on to say that such crime occurred in various places and involved various objects. Sometimes the thieves break into empty houses, other times the thieves rob mobile phones or other valuable things from passersby.
Through the challenge, Syafruddin added, the residents wanted to help the police to keep the area safe. The reward money is allocated from the RW’s petty cash fund.
“We’re helping the police. If someone catches a culprit, we will immediately take them to the police,” he said.
Officers of RW 03 have put up banners on Jl. Belimbing and Jl. Pepaya to announce the challenge.
To win the prize, not only does someone need to catch a thief or robber, they should also bring along the evidence. (vla)
