Police have shot dead a suspected motorcycle thief in Mangga Besar, West Jakarta, and arrested three of his accomplices who are believed to be repeat offenders in robberies across the capital.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said the arrests occurred at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday after detectives received a report about a theft that occurred at around 6 p.m. on Saturday.
“When the team arrived at the arrest scene, one of the suspects fought back with a firearm forcing the officers to take decisive action by shooting him, he was hit in the chest,” Argo said on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
The dead suspect has been identified only as AB, 28. AB was the main operator, while the other three, namely DD, AT, 25, and AR, 19, acted as lookouts.
“At the scene, AB fired at the officers with a revolver-type firearm. One officer shot AB. Meanwhile, the three others were arrested and are currently behind bars,” said Argo.
“The three suspects will be charged under articles 170 and 365 of the Criminal Code, with a sentence of up to nine years in prison,” Argo added.
