La Nyalla Mahmud Matalitti, the newly elected DPD speaker, has previously been implicated in graft cases and led the PSSI during its conflict with the government that resulted in the body being suspended by FIFA. He has also admitted to falsely accusing President Joko Widodo of being a communist.
The Regional Representatives Council (DPD) voted on Tuesday to elect controversial businessman La Nyalla Mahmud Matalitti as its new speaker.
La Nyalla was elected after winning 47 of the 134 votes.
Incumbent Nono Sampono of Maluku received 40 votes, while Mahyudin of East Kalimantan received 28 votes and Sultan Bachtiar Najamuddin of Bengkulu received 18 votes. They will now serve as deputy speakers.
La Nyalla, a DPD member from East Java, is a controversial figure who has been implicated in several criminal cases.
As the then-chairman of the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI), La Nyalla was declared a suspect in March 2016 for his alleged involvement in a corruption case concerning a Rp 5.3 billion (US$389,302) grant from the East Java administration. He allegedly used the money to purchase shares in the province-owned Bank Jatim in 2012 from which he earned Rp 1.1 billion in personal gains.
He was later reported to have fled to Malaysia and then to Singapore before being deported from Singapore in May.
