The woman suspects her husband's older brother poured liquid chemicals on her dogs.
man allegedly poured liquid chemicals on six dogs in Jl. Kramat, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, killing five puppies, while their mother sustained severe injuries.
Cassie, the mother of the puppies, is currently under intensive care at an animal clinic.
The dogs are owned by a couple named Andre and Jelli Weni.
Jelli suspects Andre’s older brother, Haris, poured the chemicals on her dogs.
She explained that she was sleeping on Sunday when she heard her dogs whimpering. Jelli went to the dogs’ cage and saw Haris washing his hands.
Jelli said she spotted white blotches under the cage, presumably floor liquid cleaner or caustic soda. Her dogs suddenly started losing their fur and she spotted blisters all over their bodies.
“I asked [Haris] why my dogs were crying. But he said it wasn’t his fault,” she said, kompas.com reported.
Jelli said there were indications her brother-in-law suffered from a mental disorder, adding that he seemed to be under stress and often played with water at home.
“Sometimes he is grumpy and he walks alone while talking to himself,” Jelli said on Tuesday.
She added that Haris seemed to dislike animals, leading her to suspect that he was the culprit behind the incident.
Jelli brought her pets to an animal clinic with the help of animal welfare group Natha Satwa Nusantara Foundation.
The foundation then reported the alleged animal abuse to the Central Jakarta Police on Monday.
Jelli said she would be ready to provide testimony, stating Haris’ alleged act was “outrageous”.
“Even netizens have commented as if they are the owners [of her dogs]. How can I do nothing? I won’t withdraw the [police] report,” she said.
The police are currently digging deeper into the case. (sau)
