The slogan, “crush Malaysia”, which was coined by former president Soekarno during clashes with the nascent nation in the 1960s, has been deployed by internet users angry about the alleged assault of Indonesia fans at a soccer match in Kuala Lumpur.
An alleged assault, in which Indonesian soccer supporters were reportedly beaten by Malaysian soccer supporters in Kuala Lumpur, has angered many Indonesians at home who have called for a thorough investigation of the reported violence.
The reported incident, footage of which went viral on social media, has inflamed tensions on Twitter, where users have posted their criticism with the hashtag #GanyangMalaysia (crush Malaysia). The hashtag was trending in Indonesia on Friday.
The incident reportedly occurred around the time of a soccer match between Indonesia and Malaysia during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
In a video posted on Twitter by social media activist Permadi Arya under the account @permadiaktivis, an apparent Indonesia supporter was beaten by a group of apparent Malaysia supporters outside the stadium.
Addressing the Twitter account of Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq, Permadi wrote, “Minister of Sport @SyedSaddiq, here is a video of Indonesia supporters getting beaten up by Malaysia supporters after our last match […]”
Syed wrote in a Twitter post that he had called for an investigation into the alleged assault and would cooperate with the police to handle the matter.
