he government is considering establishing international fish markets in a number of locations in the country to unlock the economic potential of Indonesia’s fisheries sector.

The chairman of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Suharso Monoarfa, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the establishment of international fish markets was needed to boost the fisheries sector’s contribution to the economy.

He proposed three areas – Likupan in North Sulawesi, Tual in Maluku and Bagansiapiapi in Riau – as the locations for the markets.

Suharso said that Likupang, a famous tourist destination in North Sulawesi, would be a suitable place to build an international fish market because it already had the necessary infrastructure, such as bridges and five-star hotels.

“We have to establish an international fish market right away,” Suharso said in his remarks at a national coordination meet of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry at the Borobudur Hotel in Jakarta.

Suharso said that by establishing an international fish market and reorganizing fish auctions, the fisheries sector could earn around US$100 billion to $150 billion a year in the next five years, contributing up to 11 percent of the country’s GDP.

Speaking at the same event, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the establishment of an international fish market would not only help reduce the supply chain to end-buyers but also draw in international buyers.
