any residential areas are still submerged by standing water after massive flooding hit Greater Jakarta and Lebak, Banten, following heavy downpours of rain in the region from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning, leaving at least 43 people dead.

Thousands of residents have fled to makeshift tents and evacuation points and are in need of immediate supplies including medicines, blankets, instant food, drinking water, tents or tarpaulins, pillows, diapers, flashlights and any other emergency items.

A number of parties from both the public and private sectors have come together to provide help and raise donations.

Central Jakarta resident Kadenza Tamara Indratmo, 25, bought ready-to-eat food for the evacuees on Thursday after independently fundraising for the flood victims through social media together with her coworker Pravithea Adhiatma.

“I was inspired by Bu Siti who served free hot tea for flood victims and rescue workers in her area. I want to help too,” Kadenza told The Jakarta Post on Friday, referring to Siti Sarah whose good deeds in Meruya, West Jakarta, were documented by BBC Indonesia.

As she set her focus on helping women, children and the elderly, she spent the donations raised on baby diapers, adult diapers, sanitary pads and underwear.

“Moreover, in such conditions there is hardly any clean water or gas, so I think it’s better to give them cooked food,” said Kadenza, adding that she would also distribute goods to victims around Ciledug subdistrict in Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday.
