Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s visit to Vietnam and Indonesia marks an important occasion in Japan’s relations with Southeast Asia. It has been several years since the last visit of a Japanese prime minister — former PM Shinzo Abe has had to shorten or cancel his visit to Jakarta twice, once due to the In Amenas hostage crisis in Algeria and the other time due to a health issue.
