Indonesia aims to host Formula One race next year

"We're all looking into all possibilities. Staging events for big brands like F1 Power Boat is not easy. We also want to stage Formula One here. Probably next year," President Jokowi said, referring to the Formula 1 Powerboat race event on Lake Toba, which wrapped up over the weekend.

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said on Sunday that he had set up a team to prepare the logistics for holding a Formula One race in the country and if possible the event could take place next year.

"We're all looking into all possibilities. Staging events for big brands like F1 Power Boat is not easy. We also want to stage Formula One here. Probably next year," President Jokowi said, referring to the Formula 1 Powerboat race event on Lake Toba, which wrapped up over the weekend.

Jokowi added that the government was looking at staging other major sports event in the country.

Following the success of the 2018 Asian Games, Indonesia has campaigned to bring more international sporting events to the country.

This year, Indonesia will play host to the U-20 soccer World Cup, despite the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy in Malang, East Java, that left 132 people dead.

Indonesia will bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics after failing to secure the 2032 games, losing to Brisbane, Australia.

President Jokowi has formally announced his desire to hold the 2036 Olympic Games in the country’s still-to-be-built capital city, Nusantara.
