BWF vows ‘thorough review’ after Chinese shuttler’s death Chinese junior badminton player Zhang Zhi Jie (The Jakarta Post/PBSI)

T

he Badminton World Federation (BWF) has pledged to thoroughly review the circumstances surrounding the death of Chinese shuttler Zhang Zhie Jie, as well as its own safety protocols, after the 17-year-old collapsed in a team match at the 2024 Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta.

Zhang suddenly lost consciousness on Sunday while playing a match against Kazuma Kawano of Japan. He received first aid at the venue and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead later that night after repeated failed efforts to resuscitate him.

Officials later declared that Zhang had experienced sudden cardiac arrest.

On social media, observers criticized the apparent hesitance of the medical team to assist the young shuttler when he collapsed on the court.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the BWF said it was “waiting for an official report from Badminton Asia and the local organizing committee to assess whether the correct medical procedures were followed in providing aid to Zhang”.

Badminton Asia was the organizer of the competition, while the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) was the local organizing committee referred to in the statement.
