Women’s soccer team wins first trophy with 3-1 victory over Cambodia

The 2024 AFF Cup trophy, won after a 3-1 victory over Cambodia, is the first for the Indonesian women's national soccer team since its establishment in 1975.

hree goals from Reva Octaviani and Sydney Hooper made the Indonesian women’s national soccer team the champion of the 2024 AFF Women’s Cup after a 3-1 victory in the final game against Cambodia on Thursday evening.

The trophy became the first win in a competition for the team, nicknamed Garuda Pertiwi, since its establishment five decades ago. 

The final match was played on Thursday evening at the New Laos National Stadium in Vientiane. Indonesia reached the final after beating Singapore 3-0 in the semifinal, while Cambodia won against Timor-Leste with the same scoreline in the previous round.

Both teams tried to dominate possession from the start of the first half, as reported by tempo.co

Cambodia tried to penetrate the Indonesian defense only to be halted by the defenders before reaching the opponent’s penalty box. Cambodian players had several chances to score a goal, including a shot from attacking midfielder Heng Sovanmopny that was deflected by Indonesian goalkeeper Laita Masykuroh.

The first goal was made in the 19th minute after a pass from attacker Katarina Stalin reached Reva, who sent the ball home to give Indonesia a 1-0 lead.
