he Indonesian senior men’s futsal team claimed the runner-up title at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Asian Cup 2026 after losing to Iran in the final on Saturday, a feat that has ignited optimism for the squad, while also raising comparisons with its soccer counterparts.
The final match heated up quickly after Iranian pivot Hossein Tayyebi scored the first goal of the game within three minutes after kick-off. But Indonesia equalized four minutes later when 27-year-old Reza Gunawan struck a loose rebound past Iranian goalkeeper Bagher Mohammadi.
Enjoying constant cheers from more than 10,000 supporters inside the Indonesia Arena at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex in Jakarta, Indonesia distanced itself from Iran by half time.
But Iran dominated the field and held the host country to a 5-5 draw until the final whistle of extra time.
Indonesia, led by Spanish coach Héctor Souto Vázquez, eventually lost the game in a 5-4 penalty shootout after Iran’s Hossein Sabzi broke the tie, securing his country’s 14th championship at the tournament.
Despite the defeat, the runner-up title marks Indonesia’s best achievement since its debut at the tournament in 2002.
Its previous best feat in the Asian Cup was reaching the quarterfinals of the 2022 competition in Kuwait. The team did not qualify for the 2024 tournament in Thailand.
