View all search resultsThe Jakarta Police have asserted that investigators are still working on their case against former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chair Firli Bahuri, after he withdrew a third pretrial motion challenging his naming as a suspect for allegedly extorting a former minister.
Public pressure is mounting on the Jakarta Police to conclude its graft investigation into former KPK chief Firli Bahuri amid the antigraft body's ongoing leadership selection, following nine months of sluggish progress since he was named as a suspect November 2023.
The shortlist of KPK commissioner candidates includes controversial figures like incumbent commissioners Johanis Tanak and Nurul Ghufron, both of whom have faced ethics probes from the KPK Supervisory Board for alleged ethics violations.
Of the total Rp 44.3 billion and $30,000 Syahrul accepted, judges found that the former minister only used around Rp 14.1 billion and $30,000 for his personal use, as some expenses were deemed reasonable to be taken from the ministry's budget, despite the illicit method of obtaining the money.
Once seen as the country’s most effective graft fighting institution, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is ending 2023 with a significant public confidence deficit following an extortion scandal implicating its leader that overshadowed the high-profile arrests it made throughout the year.
The KPK supervisory council has issued a punitive recommendation that suspended KPK chair Firli resign from his position, the maximum punishment it is authorized to hand down, after finding him guilty of ethical violations at a hearing on Wednesday.
The judge argues that the plaintiff has mixed up formal and nonformal materials which is beyond the court's authority. Firli has also presented irrelevant pieces of evidence, making the reason behind the pretrial motion unclear or vague, according to the judge.
The antigraft body is expanding its investigation into the two corruption cases implicating the former agriculture minister by following a trail of illicit money to House Commission IV, which oversees agriculture.
