The Jakarta administration has stepped up river cleanup and normalization efforts as flooding continued to disrupt large parts of the capital on Friday, following heavy overnight rainfall that caused rivers to overflow, inundating residential areas and major roads.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is aiming to expedite the long-stalled normalization of Ciliwung River to help mitigate flooding in Greater Jakarta, following severe floods earlier last month that claimed at least nine lives.
The Greater Jakarta area cannot seem to catch a break as it recently suffered its worst flood since 2020, in what is dubbed the "five-year flood cycle”. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, who have only been in office for a month, have been criticized throughout this crisis as their constituents demand answers and adequate action to address the recurring natural disaster striking their regions.
