Since being forced from power in a coup last year, Nobel laureate Suu Kyi has been charged with offences ranging from incitement and graft to violations of electoral and state secrets laws, which carry combined maximum sentences of more than 150 years.

For years, Myanmar Beer dominated bars and supermarket shelves, the Japanese backing is a sign of the economic liberalization washing into the Southeast Asian country after the military relaxed its iron grip on power in 2011.
Telenor in May 2021 wrote down the value of its Myanmar business by 6.5 billion crowns ($751 million) and later said it would be sold for $105 million to Lebanese investment firm M1 and local firm Shwe Byain Phyu.
"M1 Group has been informed that the Myanmar Investment Commission has approved Telenor Group's application for the sale of Telenor Myanmar to Investcom PTE Ltd., an M1 Group affiliate," M1 said in a statement.
