Lawmakers and government representatives have agreed that a sitting president appoint the chair of the propose Jakarta Agglomeration Council, after critics pointed out that the initial bill putting the vice president at its helm seemed accommodative of Jokowi's perceived dynastic interests.
The government has called on lawmakers to allow Jakartans to elect their own governor once the city loses its national capital status as the House of Representatives kickstarted the deliberation of the Jakarta special designation bill on Wednesday.
The Jakarta special designation bill, which seeks to provide a legal framework for the city’s position when it loses its capital status next year, has sparked concerns over a provision that could strip the city’s 10 million residents of their right to elect a governor.
The House of Representatives has backtracked on a plan to amend the 2003 Constitutional Court Law this sitting period after the government declined to sign the bill amid public criticism that the changes could allow lawmakers to unduly influence the judiciary, which has the authority to rule on election disputes.
Following mounting public criticism, the government has opposed a House proposal to revise the Constitutional Court Law with provisions that would require some justices to be evaluated by their appointing instutitions but not others.
