View all search resultsJapan’s exports rose for the first time in two years in December, driven by shipments to China, government data showed, offering a glimmer of hope for policymakers counting on an export-led recovery amid a resurgence of the coronavirus.
“I think there will be some people who are taken aback by the incident and cancel their trip, but the majority of people will not be affected,” aviation observer Arista Atmadjati told The Jakarta Post in an interview on Tuesday.
Energy demand has plummeted to historic lows as local administrations enacted partial lockdown to contain the pandemic. All but several industries, such as food, finance and medicine, were forced to shut down.
Ministry of Finance (MOF) data out on Wednesday showed exports fell 4.2 percent in November from a year earlier, defying the economists’ median estimate of a 0.5 percent increase in a Reuters poll. It was the 24th straight month of decline, the longest stretch on record, and follows a 0.2 percent drop in the previous month.
