View all search resultsThousands of people and homes have been affected by flooding in South Sulawesi, including the provincial capital Makassar, after days of downpours caused three rivers to overflow, with the local branch of the national weather agency forecasting more rain in the province's northern highlands.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned in a statement on Thursday that most parts of the archipelago were forecast to experience heavy rain with strong winds until Feb. 13, due to the influence of Tropical Cyclone Taliah in the Indian Ocean to the south, as well as a tropical depression identified as 95W in the western Pacific Ocean.
Extreme rain with lightning and strong winds on Tuesday and Wednesday disrupted flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, with authorities diverting at least 23 flights to other airports for safety reasons.
